Cognitive Dissonace

By Allondra Shaira Serdenia | Tuesday, August 26, 2014

"When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts." The opening of classes has started on June 2, 2014. It is again another year of challenges and sacrifices for the parents and especially to the teachers.

For this school year, teachers need to expand again their patience. The attitudes of students are now unpredictable. It's hard to deal with people who are unwilling to listen.

Nowadays, modern technology has brought great impact to the lives of the young generation particularly to their attitudes. Gadgets helped a lot in their numerous subjects. But sometimes, it is the main reason whys some students are now very lazy in submitting their projects and researching from books.

Students' attitudes are getting worse. There are those learners who don't even know how to respect their teachers. During class discussions, they'll go in and out the classroom without asking the teacher's permission. And worse, they just attend the classes they want to. These students are fond of what we call "cutting classes".

Vandalism, Plagiarism, and Bullying are now considered are crimes. But many learners seem to be unaware and are fearlessly doing these. Bullying is really a serious act, not only students but also teachers are being bullied. It may affect a person's physical, emotional, academic and social well-being.

One problem also that we encounter from the learners is the cognitive dissonace. In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the excessive mental stress and discomport experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time. A student with cognitive dissonance will not accept or follow any opinions because he only trusts his own beliefs and expectations.

From my observations, the new generation is now taken through the changes of modernization. It is very important for us to maintain the good moral values from our ancestors. The students' attitudes are slowly getting worse. The government shall make a move to preserve the good attitudes of the learners. They should conduct seminars, trainings or programs. There should be activities or camps that will encourage my fellow youth against bad habits or drugs and will improve our capabilities. Each student should have a club to join with so that during vacant periods, he'll help to his club instead of roaming around the campus. Let us help one another, change for the better and prove what Rizal once said, "The youth is the hope of the Motherland!"
